Live by Faith Not by Feelings, is a knitted conversation between Zoë Brooks and the Catholic Church Craft Group.
Exploring the narrative of ‘The Immaculate Conception’ tells the story of Brooks and her sister’s own “immaculate conception.” Through a series of facilitations working across Australia in collaboration with Church craft groups, knitting is the predominant medium. Here, the immaculate conception is revealed in the work as civilising technology, returning us to the primacy of the mother and the treatment of IVF reveals itself as a technology of immaculate conception.
Brooks works in collaboration with the Catholic Church Craft Group honouring a promise once made by her parents of their unborn children to the Catholic Church in exchange for approval of their marriage. However, Brooks and her sister were conceived through IVF processes against Catholic beliefs left them unwanted by the parish.
Through the Catholic Church’s craft group meetings, a time when everyone is welcome, Brooks embarks on a knitted conversation that presents a timely conflict between ancient beliefs and new technology.
